The thermostat says 74°F. The air conditioner is cycling on and off. Yet the room feels clammy, and the little humidity meter on the shelf reads 68 percent. Turning the temperature down another two degrees is tempting, but it is also a pretty expensive way to guess.
That one reading cannot tell you whether the meter is off, last night's shower is still affecting the hallway, humid outdoor air is getting in, or the cooling system is removing less moisture than expected. What it can do is start a useful two-day record. You do not need to open the air handler or crawl into the attic. You just need to notice when the number changes.
First, make sure the number is a pattern
The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent and says 30 to 50 percent is ideal when practical. Those are useful reference points, not a diagnosis. Relative humidity moves when temperature changes, and an inexpensive meter can disagree with another one.
Put the meter in an ordinary living area, away from a supply vent, sunny window, bathroom door or steaming stove. Leave it there long enough to settle. If you have a second meter, place the two side by side for several hours. They do not have to match perfectly. A large, persistent disagreement is a reason to question the instrument before blaming the house.
Then check more than one room. A high reading only in the bathroom after a shower tells a different story from similar readings in the living room and bedrooms all afternoon. Do not carry one meter rapidly from room to room and treat each first number as settled. Give it time in each location.
The goal is modest: find out whether the same high range keeps returning under similar conditions.
Keep a two-day humidity log
This is a homeowner observation method, not an EPA test or an HVAC diagnosis. For two ordinary days, write down a few details three or four times a day:
- indoor temperature and relative humidity, from the same location;
- whether the AC is running, recently stopped or has been off for a while;
- whether cycles seem like brief bursts or longer runs;
- rain, unusually muggy weather or an exterior door left open;
- showers, cooking, laundry or other obvious moisture events;
- condensation, damp spots, drips or standing water you can see without opening equipment.
A phone note is fine. Something like “3:30 p.m., 75°F, 64 percent, AC stopped ten minutes ago, heavy rain” is more useful than a page of theories.
Do not change five things at once. If you lower the thermostat, move the meter, run a dehumidifier and close every interior door on the same afternoon, you will not know which change mattered. Keep the house operating normally while you watch for a repeatable pattern.
Outdoor humidity can provide context, but do not compare the outdoor and indoor percentages as if they were the same measurement. Relative humidity depends on temperature. Your log is meant to capture what happens indoors, not turn a weather app into a building-science lab.
What the pattern may help a professional investigate
An air conditioner normally removes some moisture as warm indoor air passes over a cold coil. Several different problems can interfere with that process or add moisture faster than the system removes it. Your notes cannot identify the culprit, but they can make the first service visit less vague.
For example, the EPA warns that an oversized air conditioner may cool a home quickly, shut off and repeat short cycles without running long enough to reduce humidity adequately. That does not mean short cycles prove the equipment is oversized. Thermostat settings, controls, airflow, maintenance issues and the actual cooling load all matter. ENERGY STAR recommends that contractors size equipment from the home's real characteristics and check airflow, ducts and refrigerant charge rather than relying on a simple square-foot rule.
Moisture can also come from the house rather than the cooling capacity. Rainwater intrusion, plumbing leaks, damp materials, unvented moisture sources and humid air entering through leaks all deserve different fixes. The EPA's moisture guidance puts source control first: find and correct the moisture problem instead of merely hiding the reading.
Your log may reveal a useful clue:
- A short spike after a shower or cooking points to a timing and ventilation question.
- Similar high readings in several rooms suggest a broader pattern worth reporting.
- Humidity that rises during repeated brief AC cycles gives the technician a cycle pattern to examine.
- One room that behaves differently may call for a closer look at meter placement, airflow or a local moisture source.
- Condensation, a wet ceiling or water around equipment is not a “wait two days and see” item.
None of those clues is a verdict. Houses are annoyingly good at making different problems look alike.
Do not overlook the water the system collects
Cooling equipment produces condensate, which should leave through its designed drain path. The EPA notes that cooling coils, drain pans and nearby areas should be kept clean and that standing water deserves prompt attention. From the living space, you can safely note water on the floor, a wet cabinet exterior or a drain problem that is already visible.
Do not remove panels, reach into the unit, clear a concealed line with improvised pressure, handle refrigerant components or work around live wiring. A blocked drain, frozen coil or internal contamination needs the right diagnosis and safe access.
If the system runs but there is little or no air at the registers, mention that when you call. Airflow is part of moisture removal, and ENERGY STAR includes measured airflow in a quality installation. Feeling a vent with your hand can flag an obvious change; it cannot measure system performance.
Would a dehumidifier solve it?
Sometimes dehumidification is a legitimate part of the answer. Department of Energy Building America guidance says a whole-house dehumidifier may be appropriate when indoor humidity remains high after air leakage and water-intrusion sources have been addressed. The EPA likewise notes that warm, humid climates may require a deliberate dehumidification strategy when indoor humidity stays above 60 percent.
But buying a dehumidifier first does not explain why the house is damp. A portable unit may lower humidity in one area while a leak, drainage problem or equipment issue continues. It also adds electrical use and requires correct drainage and maintenance. Treat it as a possible control measure to discuss, not as a substitute for finding active moisture.
Make the service call specific
Bring the two-day log and ask the contractor to explain what will be measured. Useful questions include:
- Is the humidity reading confirmed with your instrument?
- Are the AC cycles unusually short under the current conditions?
- Is condensate draining correctly, with no standing water in the accessible system?
- Is measured airflow within the equipment manufacturer's range?
- Are the return and supply paths, filter, coil and ducts affecting airflow?
- Was the equipment size checked against an actual load calculation for this house?
- If you recommend a dehumidifier, which moisture sources and equipment issues have already been ruled out?
A good answer ties a recommendation to an observation or measurement. “Bigger is better” is not a measurement.
Know when to stop watching and call
Skip the two-day experiment and get qualified help for an active plumbing or roof leak, recurring wet materials, standing water near electrical equipment, a burning smell, a tripped breaker, a system that repeatedly shuts down or a sudden loss of airflow. Turn off equipment only if you can do so normally and safely; do not enter a wet area to reach a switch.
If you see or smell possible mold in HVAC equipment, do not open or disturb it yourself. The EPA warns that a contaminated system can spread material through the home. Arrange qualified evaluation and ask whether the system should remain off. Large or recurring mold problems, sewage-contaminated water and moisture-related health symptoms also belong with qualified professionals. A clinician, not a humidity meter, should address symptoms.
Most of the time, your job is not to solve the house in a weekend. It is to replace “it feels damp” with a clear pattern: where, when, how high, what the AC was doing and whether any water was visible. That is enough to turn a guessy service call into a much better conversation.
